Interview

The video above is an interview with Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In the interview he discusses the topics of literature, film, culture, and the inspiration behind some of his writings. He compares literature and film giving his opinion on both of them, including advantages and disadvantages. He explains how literature gives the reader the room to imagine and fill in the missing pieces how they see fit. Film, on the other hand, does not allow this because it is shown visually to the audience giving them a preconceived idea. However, he mentions the goal of both literature and film is to reach people. For this, film is the better choice. Television and cinema can reach millions of people in one night, something literature may never do. Marquez also talks about some of the scenarios that his stories are based off of. For example, “Remedies of Beauty” comes from a woman he saw hanging a sheet in Aracatara, Columbia. “A Time to Die” was inspired by a Sophocles’ play. Lastly, he talks about the cultural side of society. Culture plays a huge role in who a person is and how they view concepts. Also, culture is expanding, specifically his own culture in to the United States.
